Southwest Credit Cards Offer Free Companion Pass

Trips for two will be much cheaper if you take advantage of this Southwest credit card offer.

For frequent travelers to the southwest, the airline’s Companion Pass is one of the best perks around. With it you can choose a companion who will fly with you almost for free. The only fees it doesn’t cover are taxes and fees, starting at $ 5.60 one way.

Normally, it takes a while to get your hands on a Companion Pass. You must either earn 125,000 qualifying points or complete 100 qualifying one-way flights in a calendar year to earn it.

That’s no longer the case thanks to a new limited-time offer with Southwest airline credit cards. From February 9 to March 10, 2021, each card offers a sign-up bonus of 30,000 points and a free pass (valid until February 28, 2022) after spending $ 5,000 on purchases within three months. Here’s everything you need to know about the deal.

The new Southwest Companion Pass offer

The 30,000-point limited-time sign-up bonus and companion pass is available on all three Southwest maps. Here are the most notable credit cards, their cost and features:

If you want to go with the cheapest option, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus credit card is the way to go. It costs just $ 69 and can still get you a companion pass.

However, you might want to consider one of the other two travel rewards cards if you travel with Southwest often. Even though they cost more, they also offer more bonus points each year.

There is a change in how this Companion Pass works. It is valid until February 28, 2022 or about a year. When you get a Companion Pass by earning 125,000 qualifying points or taking 100 qualifying one-way flights, that’s good for the rest of the calendar year. and throughout the following calendar year.

Qualifying for a Southwest Credit Card Bonus

Before you apply for a Southwest credit card, you should know a few requirements.

Chase is the issuer of Southwest’s cards, so they are subject to the Chase 5/24 rule. Because of this rule, which applies to all Chase credit cards, applicants who have already opened five or more credit cards in the past 24 months are almost always turned down. Simply put, you should only apply for a Southwest card if you have opened four cards or less in the past two years.

You also usually need good credit to open a Southwest card. To be precise, a FICO® score of 670 or higher is recommended.

Finally, you are only eligible for the bonus offer on a Southwest credit card if both of the following conditions are met:

  • You do not currently have a Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus credit card.
  • You have not received the signup bonus on a Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus credit card (excluding business cards) in the past 24 months.

Should You Benefit From This Southwest Credit Card Offer?

This new offering from Southwest is a great deal, but it’s not for everyone. Sign-up bonuses on these cards previously offered more points without a Companion Pass. It is possible that after the end of the offer on March 10, the number of bonus points will increase.

If you travel southwest with a companion at least two to three times a year, you should take the opportunity to get a companion pass. In this situation, it is an extremely valuable advantage. Remember, once you’ve chosen someone as a travel partner for your Companion Pass, there is no change. You couldn’t use it with a friend for a flight, then a relative, etc.

Those without a consistent travel companion will likely be better served while waiting for a sign-up bonus that offers more points. But for couples, families, and any other group that fly together, a companion pass can help save you a lot of money.
