Lip Flip Makeup Tricks to Get the Look Without a Plastic Surgeon

Ahhh, the lip flip… This subtle aesthetic procedure has amassed over 100 million views on TikTok (#lipflip) and is regularly requested by people of all ages. The treatment is quite simple: about four to six units of a neuromodulator, such as Botox, are injected just above the upper lip (near the Cupid’s bow and around the corners of the mouth) for an effect more complete and more defined. The catch, of course, is that this treatment involves needles, isn’t cheap, and requires maintenance. Luckily, there are lip makeup hacks that will mimic that alluring, sulky look — without the needles.

First thing is first: what’s the deal with lip flips?

As mentioned above, lip flip is an outpatient cosmetic procedure to create the appearance of fuller lips without the use of lip fillers or implants.

“Most people associate Botox with crippling forehead lines and crow’s feet, but more recently it has been used ‘off label’ for what was coined the ‘lip flip,'” says Dr. Michael Horn , a board-certified plastic surgeon. based in Chicago. “The main goal is to relax the muscles that connect to the upper lip. This allows the lip to curl and relax outward, making it appear more defined and wider in shape.

The effect is said to be more subtle than what you’d get with dermal fillers, and on average you’ll pay around $300 for a lip flip (although prices vary depending on your injector’s specified rates). Results appear a week or two later once the neuromodulator kicks in, and they last about three months.

There’s also a potential downside that isn’t discussed enough, notes New York board-certified dermatologist Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank. “The downside is that if a lip flip is done improperly – or too much – it can weaken the muscles. [around the lips],” he says. “It affects movements around the mouth, like smiling or drinking through a straw.”

The Highlight Method

For this method, you’ll need a lip liner that’s a shade darker than your lip color and has some brown in it, advises celebrity makeup artist Jamie Dorman. “This will create the illusion of a shadow around your lip,” she explains.

Once you have the right color, lightly trace your Natural lip versus highlight right away. The goal is to slowly develop this lip look, instead of drawing it right away. (This tends to look unnatural.)

Once your natural lips have been drawn, then you can start highlighting by drawing on the raised outer part of your lip.

“It should be about the width of a pencil tip past your lip line on your skin,” says New York-based celebrity makeup artist and beauty expert Bryan Cantor. “Drawing further on the flat part of your face looks very fake and noticeable.”

Cantor adds that it’s helpful to look at a reference photo for inspiration. Choose a model whose lips are similar in shape and size to yours; the results will be more achievable and realistic.

The contoured lip approach

The objective of this technique is to create the illusion of a fuller lip using “shadows” and “light”. It’s the same concept as when you contour your cheekbones or jawline, but focus on your pout instead.

For this approach, you will need a slightly darker lip liner paired with a lighter lipstick, stain or gloss. Also have a highlighter handy.

“Start by covering your lips, bringing the liner further down your natural lips more than you normally would and making that line on your lips extra thick,” Cantor says. “Next, fill in the corners of your lip to form a ‘C’ on each side, with the open part of the ‘C’ facing the center of your lips. Next, take a lip brush and gently blend the edges of your pencil towards the center of your lips to create a soft contour.

Then, apply your lipstick in the center of your lips – slightly overlapping the contour – and rub your lips a few times to blend them. Don’t bring the center color all the way to the edge of your exposed lip.

Finally, reapply your liner and blend some more, either with a lip brush or by rubbing your lips together.

To play around with the contour approach even more, Dorman says to take a highlighter and apply it to the top of the cupid’s bow using a small shadow brush. “A cream or liquid highlighter will blend and blend well with the texture of lip products,” she says.

The no-makeup approach

If you’d rather not wear makeup at all, you can create subtly fuller lips with ultra-hydrating lip products.

Cantor says a clear gloss or concentrated lip oil In the center lips can also create the illusion of lip flipping. Choose a product made with a humectant like hyaluronic acid, which draws moisture from the air and instantly creates a plumping effect.
