4 Ball State graduates selected for the Fulbright US Student Program

Of Ball State University’s 14 semifinalists in the 2022 competition, four recent Ball State University graduates were selected to be part of the American Fulbright Student Program. This program is a very prestigious and widely recognized international program that grants support to pursue higher education, conduct research or teach English abroad. Each graduate has been selected for an English Teaching Assistant (ETA) position, where they will help students in their host country develop their English skills and serve as a cultural ambassador between nations.

The 2022 Ball State Fulbright US Student Program selections are:

  • Brianna Lopez of Noblesville, Ind. : Host Country Destination — Bulgaria

Lopez is graduating from Ball State in the spring semester of 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and minors in philosophy and women’s and gender studies. At Ball State, she served as a teaching assistant in two psychology courses, peer mentor for freshmen at Honors College, associate editor of the Ball State International Journal of Undergraduate Philosophy, and co-founder of a new undergraduate psychology journal.

  • Alexis Pitchford of Carmel, Ind. : Host Country Destination—Greece

Pitchford is graduating from Ball State in the fall semester of 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a minor in human development psychology. She is currently a graduate student in the educational psychology program and is expected to complete her master’s degree in July 2022. At Ball State, Pitchford served as a tutor and board member for Make-A-Wish and Hillel, a Jewish student. organization.

  • Riley Sigler from Torrance, California: Host Country Destination: Spain

Sigler is graduating from Ball State in the spring semester of 2022 with a major in theater (action) and a minor in Spanish. At Ball State, Sigler has acted, directed shows with young children in performing arts workshops, produced and hosted a podcast, and served as a teaching assistant. She plans to continue acting, while teaching theater, eventually at the university level.

  • Jess Walls from Brookville, Indiana: Host Country Destination: Taiwan

Walls is graduating from Ball State in the spring semester of 2022 with a major in teaching in English and a minor in Chinese. At Ball State, she participated in the Future Educators Peer Mentorship Program, the Cardinal Teacher Corps, and the Chinese Club. After being part of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, Walls plans to complete a post-baccalaureate certification in teaching Mandarin as a foreign language and teach English language arts and Mandarin in Indiana schools.

Jessie Russett of Trinidad, Colo.graduating from Ball State in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in History and graduating in 2012 with a Master of Arts in Anthropology, was offered a Fulbright ETA in Poland, but chose to decline.
